Zulum establishes a committee to implement minimum wage

Babagana Umara Zulum, governor of Borno state, has given his approval for a committee to be formed in order to plan the implementation of the new national minimum wage.

The committee will be co-chaired by Barrister Mallam Fannami and headed by Engr. Babagana Mustapha Malumbe, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Secretary to the Borno State Government.

As stated in the statement, the committee is tasked with various duties.

These include analyzing the current federal consequential salary adjustment and determining its applicability to the state, developing a sustainable and reasonable salary adjustment that takes into account the state’s unique characteristics, and addressing any other issues that may arise in the process of determining a fair and realistic salary for government employees.

“Twelve additional government officials make up the committee: Barr. Hauwa Abubakar, who is the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice; Alhaji Basha Kachalla Talba, who is the Permanent Secretary for Finance and Economic Development; Dr. Muhammad Aminu Ghuluze, who is the Permanent Secretary for Environment; Dr. Juliana Bitrus, who is the Accountant-General; Baba Bura Usman, who is the Accountant-General; and Alhaji Shettima Bukar, who is the State Auditor-General.

The committee’s other members include:

Senior Technical Assistant (STA) from the General Service Mohammed Habib Alkali from the Finance and Economic Development department Mai Adamu Yau from the Biometric and Data Capture department Abubakar Kachalla from the Information and Communication Technology department Prof. Babagana Gutti from the Engineering department Bako Adamu from the General Service and Dr. Sadiq Moh’d Abubakar from the Permanent Secretary position in the Establishment.

Also, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress is headed by Comr. Yusuf Inuwa (NLC Chairman), Comr. Babayo Hamma (TUC Chairman), and Comr. Umar Abdullahi (JNC Chairman).

Comr. Musa Umar Chiroma of the NLC, Comr. Baba Mohammed of the TUC, Comr. M. Mustapha Bulama of NULGE, Comr. Haruna Musa of the JNC, Comr. Alh. Musa Bukar Kukawa of the Pensioners, and Comr. Abba Aji Suleiman of SSANIP are also mentioned.

In the role of observer, the statement mentioned Abubakar Ibrahim, the State Controller of Labor in the Federal Ministry of Labor.

As he congratulated the members on their newfound opportunity to serve the state, Zulum issued an urgent directive to get to work.

In a recent signing, President Bola Tinubu formally established a minimum wage of N70,000, following an agreement with organized labor unions.

The new national minimum wage has been authorized, and Borno is the latest federation state to take such a daring step towards implementing it.
