A section of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has denied reports that it is organizing a nationwide fuel price strike by shutting down major cities.

An announcement made public by Okunomo The president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Henry Adewumi, threatened earlier on Wednesday that the group will stage a nationwide strike on September 15, 2024, in response to the inaction on the fuel price hike.

On Wednesday, however, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, president of the NANS Senate, issued a statement in which he rejected the notification.

The statement clarified that the student group had nothing to do with the announcement or endorsement of the upcoming demonstration.

It said that the rumours about the protest were unfounded and that they did not represent NANS’s views or goals.

A majority of NANS students have called on the government to seize anyone trying to stir up trouble in the country using the NANS name.

It urged security authorities to investigate the source of the disinformation thoroughly and emphasized the significance of always ensuring that democratic processes and the rule of law are maintained throughout the nation.

The statement highlighted the importance of identifying and punishing those responsible for spreading falsehood.

It added that using the NANS name to spread harmful and unfounded claims endangers national security and does a huge disservice to the millions of students who are really trying to make a difference the right way.

Rumors and falsehoods claiming that NANS is planning a nationwide shutdown of major cities have reached the leadership of NANS, according to parts of the statement.

We want to make it clear that NANS is not associated with or supportive of any such demonstration. The claims made in these reports lack any credibility and do not represent the views or goals of our organization.

“Our long-standing dedication to nonviolent campaigning and productive dialogue with key stakeholders has guided us as the governing body that looks out for the best interests of Nigerian students.

We are fully aware of how important it is to keep the peace and stability in our country, particularly in these difficult times. There will be no support from NANS for any acts that could cause public disorder or civil disturbance.

Please do not believe these rumors, and we are urging the media, the general public, and everyone involved to disregard them.

These rumours are being spread by anonymous individuals or groups that are trying to bring negative attention to NANS.

They intend to sow discord among the populace and undermine the country’s stability. Any such plans or intentions are completely and utterly disassociated from us.
