On Wednesday, the state e-mobility initiative, run by the government of Ogun State, saw the debut of two thousand electric motorcycles.

The program’s stated goals, according to state governor Dapo Abiodun, are to make transportation in the state more affordable and to create a cleaner environment by decreasing carbon emissions.

The e-mobility plan is another step toward a greener and more sustainable future for the state, according to Abiodun, who spoke at the initial launch phase at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

He assured the public that his administration will work to lower transportation expenses for their constituents while simultaneously easing the burden of the subsidy elimination and the high diesel fuel prices.

Approximately 2,000 e-bikes will be produced in the initial stage. Transportation expenses can be cut by 40% thanks to these commercial motorcycles, which have a range of 75–80 kilometers on a full charge, and the vehicles’ range of 200 kilometers.

Giga Facility, an assembly plant for electric bikes, two-wheelers, tricycles, commercial buses, electric cars, and swap stations, is set to be built at the Special Agro Processing Zone in Iperu-Remo, according to the governor, who also announced the groundbreaking of the project. The facility will receive a total investment of $40 million.

The first phase of this investment will center on the assembly of our E-Okada bikes; the second phase will naturally involve our tricycles; and the third phase will involve our e-vehicles. Assembly line operators would see an increase of over 10,000 direct jobs and an additional 50,000 indirect jobs, according to his statement.

But Abiodun urged the public, especially the younger generation, to work with the administration in a constructive way rather than waste time and energy on pointless demonstrations.

During his remarks, Sa’idu Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, praised Ogun state for spearheading the E-Mobility initiative. He added that Ogun is now one of several African countries utilizing over 15,000 e-bikes for transportation.

In addition to urging the people to back the program’s goals of creating jobs and making transportation more affordable, efficient, and eco-friendly, Alkali urged other state governments to follow Ogun State’s lead in collaborating with the federal government in CNG usage.

In his remarks, Mele Kyari, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), praised the state for consistently being in the forefront of innovations that would benefit the people. Mr. Lekan Ogunleye, Executive Vice President of NNPCL, represented Kyari.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Olugbenga Dairo, the Commissioner for Transportation, explained that the program’s debut was a continuation of last year’s effort to convert the CNG buses in order to combat the rise in transportation fares caused by the elimination of subsidies.
