Kenny Blaq, a well-known comic, has denied rumors that he was the first to perform music comedy in Nigeria.
The late Gbenga Adeboye, CD John, and others were instrumental in establishing the music comedy genre in Nigeria, he said.
But he insisted he introduced “the Wizkid and Davido vibe” to the style.
“A lot of people have the impression that I brought music comedy to Nigeria,” Blaq remarked in a recent interview with Hip TV, referring to his music comedy work. To this day, there are many who believe I was the pioneer of musical comedy.
Musical comedians such as Gbenga Adeboye, Fung Otong, MC Miracle, Maleke, and CD John—all of whom passed away—were among them. However, I believe that my attitude towards it is the key that differentiated mine.
The Wizkid and Davido spirit was mine to incorporate. Plus, I was able to incorporate musical styles into my comedic routines.
People who came before me in the field of music comedy have their own unique approach. It was either Yoruba or Igbo music that they were performing.
I was constant, though, and I was creating mashups and covers while narrating stories.
“I may not have been the first, but I am proud to be counted among those who have established music comedy as a powerful force in this region.”
