In the Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, rights activist Alaowei Cleric Ebikonbowei has voiced his worries over what he claims to be the despoliation and environmental deterioration of the Eseimogbene and Ayakoromo Communities.
The oil exploration activities disproportionately affect both populations, according to the BOT Chairman of the Centre for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade, CHURAC.
In a statement submitted to our reporter by the lawyer, the claims were made.
According to him, the Niger Delta communities’ biodiversity has taken a major hit due to oil exploration activities.
As a result, we must endure the pains of climate change while our flora and fauna suffer greatly.
Natural resources have been exhausted and people have fallen into abject poverty as a result of exploratory activities such as gas flaring and seismographic works, among other harmful and destructive practices.
“To make matters worse, neither the federal government nor the multinational oil corporations have made any serious attempts to mitigate the consequences.”
Even the so-called pitiful 3% host community benefits promised by the Petroleum Industry Act, 2020, has not been carried out, asserts Ebikonbowei. There is still no resolution in sight for the pain endured by these communities.
