As a way to put an end to weeks of political brinkmanship, US Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign said on Thursday that she would debate Republican challenger Donald Trump twice, while their running mates would do so once.
The two factions had already settled on a single vice presidential debate on October 1 and one presidential debate on September 10, but Trump’s camp had been demanding two further debates in September and another vice presidential encounter.
In a statement, the Harris campaign stated: “The discussion about debates is gone. We proposed holding two presidential debates and one vice presidential debate, and Donald Trump’s campaign agreed to participate.
“Assuming Trump does indeed make an appearance on September 10, Tim Walz, who is running mate to Harris, would debate J.D. Vance, Trump’s choice for vice president, on October 1. Then, later in October, there would be another debate between Trump and Harris.”
Nonetheless, a response from Trump’s campaign was slow in coming.
